Archiving Software

for Macintosh Plus and Mini vMac

Stuffit Expander 4.0.1

copyright: Aladdin Systems, Inc.
mod date: Apr 29, 1996
license: free for non-commercial use

The Allume FTP site is frequently unavailable, but copies of Stuffit Expander 4.0.1 can be found elsewhere on the web. (Try searching for 'download "Stuffit Expander 4.0.1"'.)

Decodes StuffIt and CompactPro archives, BinHex, and MacBinary. Requires System 6.0.5 or later. Version 4.5 is also available, and seems to work (for System 7), except that the about windows are partly offscreen, and not movable. The installer for version 5.0 insists that 8M of RAM is required.

One problem is how to expand the archive containing Stuffit Expander, since you can't use Stuffit Expander to do it. The binUnpk utility can solve that problem.

DropStuff 4.0

copyright: Aladdin Systems, Inc.
mod date: Mar 28, 1996
license: shareware

Creates StuffIt archives with drag & drop. Requires System 7. Comes with "Expander Enhancer", which allows "Stuffit Expander" to decode many additional archive kinds. Version 4.5 is also available, but the registration dialog is partly offscreen, so can't choose 'not yet'. Version 5.1 and 5.1.2 mostly work, but self extracting archives they create won't work on the Mac Plus, and the Alladin Compression Control Panel doesn't work. The installer for version 5.5 claims 8M of RAM is required, but it will allow you to install anyway, and it works except for the same problems as in previous versions.

Utility for Tar archive format.

MacGZip 1.1.3

copyright: SPDsoft
mod date: Sep 14, 1999
license: GPL

Macintosh port of Jean-loup Gailly's gzip. Compresses single files and uncompresses. This format is common on Unix systems, usually combined with the "tar" format for archiving multiple files. MacGZip does not include handling of "tar" format, a separate program is needed, such as MacTar. It can preserve the extra information of a Macintosh file with MacBinary, but this format is not portable. Requires at least System 7. Source code is available.

The download link requires active FTP. There is an alternate http address.
